Patient Guide

Mark Feneley specialises in various urological disorders which cover a wide variety of urological symptoms and conditions, and ensure a balanced discussion of benefits and possible risks when interventions are being considered.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia:

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous condition of the prostate that causes prostate enlargement. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia develops in most men as they get older, and may cause symptoms like inability to pass urine, needing to empty the bladder more often, nocturia (getting up at night to pass urine), incomplete emptying of the bladder and incontinence (accidental leakage of urine).

Assessments carried out at hospital include symptom score sheets (like International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), urinary flow rate and residual volume scan, digital rectal examination and Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test.

The treatment of BPH may include Surveillance - monitoring at first rather than treatment, Medication, Trans-urethral resection of prostate (TURP) - surgery to remove the prostate tissue pressing on urethra , green light laser vaporisation of prostate - using a laser to remove the enlarged prostate tissue. Green light laser vaporisation of prostate avoids the risk of erectile dysfunction that can occur after transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).
